Earlier this year, Friday, January 16th, the tax portion of the Stimulus Bill was released. In this bill, modifications to Section 25-C of the IRS Code were made(the part that allows $500.00 tax credits for homeowners who install high efficiency furnaces, boilers, hot water heaters, heat pumps and air conditioners). These modifications can really go a long way towards cutting the payback time for homeowners looking to gain the benefits of high efficiency investments.
All Seasons Air Conditioning and Heating reports that this bill has expanded the tax credit from $500.00 to $1500.00 for the years 2009 and 2010. The cumulative lifetime limitation for the taxpayer is removed; as are the equipment limits. For Example: Prior to this bill modification, a taxpayer could only claim up to $500.00 in lifetime credits and was limited to only $300.00 per high efficiency heat pump, air conditioner or hot water heater - and only $150.00 for a qualified boiler or furnace.
With this new bill modification in place - the taxpayer could claim all $1500.00 for a high efficiency heat pump or high efficiency furnace. Or the taxpayer could spread the credit around for other improvements such as windows, roofing shingles or other qualified equipment. By removing the lifetime limit, the window is open for future tax credits beyond 2010.
