Ever hear the expression; "Follow your heart"? I've been told this many times during my life not only as a child but as an adult too... by well meaning people and family, "Follow your heart". Well - Thank God for his mercy, patience and allowing me to gain better wisdom than this.
After living much of my life of good-intentioned experiences gone awry - like a few unnecessary leaps at new jobs in hopes of finding Greener Pastures, a failed marriage, battles with my own ego and arrogance, struggles with the dissatisfaction of seeking others approval and a few other bad habits picked up along the way... I found myself within an emotional downward spiral, in a haze of drugs and alcohol attempting to mend my broken heart brought about from my own good intentioned plans gone awry - which was literally a result of my choosing to follow my heart, instead of seeking God's will for me. Well, I am soberly pleased (blessed) to tell you there is a much better way to make our decisions, a better place to seek advice and a much wiser resource for us to gain wisdom than from our own hearts.
The bible tells us in Jeremiah (17:9) - that our hearts are deceitful above ALL THINGS, and is desperately wicked. That's just one, in-our-face, clue that should caution us against 'following our hearts' ... But we're also told in Matthew (6:33) - to seek FIRST (not second, or as an after thought) but to FIRST seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all things shall be added to you.
Can you identify with any of this? Can you think of any times in your life where you followed your heart - only to reach a dead end? Looking for greener pastures? Looking for a more satisfying life? Here's the answer:
Do NOT follow your heart - but DO follow your saviour, Jesus Christ. Pray and ask Him to reveal His perfect plan and will for you and your life. Study His word in the Holy Bible - there, and only there, will you find the greener pastures you desire.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. Psalm 23:2
